Andrew “Sweet Pea” Edward Hugate, Sr., 82, passed away Feb. 12, 2015 at Riverside Mathews Convalescent Center.
Sweet Pea was born in Ware Neck, but grew up in the Bohannon area of Mathews County. He served his country in the U.S. Army and later retired as a planner and estimator for the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. He spent his retirement years clamming on the “Sally M,” and continued electrical services to local contractors, and many residential customers. He donated much of his time and talent to churches, friends and relatives, and under-privileged families.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Margaret Hugate; parents, Walter W. and Lillian Smith Hugate; sisters, Helen Dobbins, Ruby Langford, Christine Belvin, and Thelma Burnette; brothers, Rodney Hugate and Walter “Jimmy” Hugate.
He is survived by children Vicki Carter (Charlie), Edward Jr. (Libby), Ruby Brown (Jeff); grandchildren, Andrew McElligott (Heather), Dawn McElligott, Richard Hugate (Sarah), Alan Brown, Susan Brown; great-grandchildren, Jacob McElligott, Miles Hugate, Carter Hayes, Carson McElligott, Sally Ann Ford, and Lyman Hayes, and sister, Bernice Colston.
A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at Providence Cemetery, followed by a celebration of his life at the West Mathews Civic Center in Bohannon.
