Alice Vernell Jones, age 90, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully with her children by her side on March 4, 2022. She was born and raised in Gloucester, and was the last of the Coley Haywood (Lizzie) legacy. She always stayed busy, whether it was making crab pots, cooking, working in the yard, or sewing. She loved to go to yard sales and always bought something. Anything to save a dollar, but you would never leave her house empty-handed when you stopped by. She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Esther McFarland (Jimmy) and Gwen Ross (Gerry); grandchildren, Brian (Sharon), Duane (Michelle), Troy and Heather; great-grandchildren, Shi and Shelbe. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Edward Lee Jones; sisters, Elaine, Mary, Gladys, Sally, Frances Marie, Martha, and brother, Roy. The family received friends on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. A graveside service conducted by William Worley will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. In Vernell’s memory, contributions may be made to Gloucester Volunteer Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
