Alice Mildred Armistead Lewis, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015.
A native of Mathews County, she had been a Newport News resident since 1941.
She was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church where she served as the church secretary and bookkeeper for 18 years. Also, she was active with the United Methodist Women and children’s programs.
Alice was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, supporting her family at church and school. She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing and needlework. Her biggest joy was being with her grandchildren. She was very proud of their college graduations and successful lives.
Alice was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, William E. Lewis; her parents, Glenn and Susie Armistead, and her sister, Hester Sadler.
Among those left to cherish her love are her four children, William Lewis Jr. (Nancy) of Eugene, Ore., Nancy Bertera (Bill) of Vienna, Va., Melinda Marshall (Bill) of Newport News, and Wayne Lewis (Carol) of The Woodlands, Texas; sisters-in-law, Virginia Kerns (Bobby), and Phyllis Lewis of Gloucester, Va.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at the funeral home, from 4-5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015. A funeral service was held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, in the W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Chapman officiating. Burial followed at Peninsula Memorial Park.
