Alice H. May (née Smith), previously of Gloucester, Va., passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024 at age 96. Alice was born on February 14, 1928 in Groton, Mass., the daughter of Theophilus Gilman Smith and Eleanor Hall Smith of Groton. Her husband of over 70 years, David May Sr., predeceased her. Left to cherish Alice’s memory are her sons, David May Jr. (Anne) of Virginia Beach, Va., Richard May (Laurie) of Williamsburg, Va., and Peter May (Tracey) of West Point, Va.; grandchildren, Lauren Eastwood (Steve), Eliot May, Emily Myrick (Joseph), John May (Natalie), and Alexandra May; and great-grandchildren, Lillie, Evangeline and Beatrix Myrick, and Bennett May. Alice received her undergraduate degree in Physical Therapy. She and David lived in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts before moving to Richmond, Va., and then retiring to Gloucester. Alice was active in Garden Clubs and enjoyed entertaining (especially family gatherings), tennis, sewing, reading, bridge, and volunteering in the community. Alice was a devoted and loving wife, mother and “Gramma.” She will be dearly missed by family and friends. A family graveside service will be held in Groton.
