ALEXANDER SPOTTSWOOD ‘BOBBY’ KEMP

Alexander Spottswood “Bobby” Kemp, 88, of Hayes, passed away Feb. 10, 2017.

Bobby was born in Gloucester County April 22, 1928 to James B. “Buddy” and Ruby Riley Kemp.

Until just a few years ago Bobby had lived at the family homeplace that he loved so much. He helped with the building of the first Coleman Bridge connecting Gloucester and Yorktown and retired from VDOT after many years of faithful service.

He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, gardening and selling watermelons. Bobby was kind and always ready to help his family and friends. He loved his mother and took great care of her, as well as his wife, brother and sister. He was deeply devoted to both his family and friends, by whom he was adored for his compassion, his humility and his quiet generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Gilda M. Kemp; brothers, Beverly Kemp, James Vernon Kemp and Oscar Dunston; sisters, Ruby Kamsch and Martha McShane; sisters-in-law, Kitty Kemp, Marguerite Kemp and Agnes Dunston; brothers-in-law, Richard Fanning, Robert Kamsch and Tommy McShane, and nephew, Billy Kemp.

He is survived by his sister, Rebecca Fanning; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Graveside funeral service conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at the Kemp Family Cemetery, Providence Baptist Church, Hayes. Family and friends assembled at the cemetery.
