ALAN BROWN

Alan Brown left us peacefully and unexpectedly on Dec. 1, 2022 to join his heavenly family and friends.

Alan was born on May 12, 1945 and began a long and wonderful life filled with adventures and making memories that most people only dream of. To say that he was a larger-than-life person only begins to describe him as the wonderful partner, son, friend and true gentleman that he was.

Those who knew him described him as the one wearing all of the gold; or the one who wears shorts 12 months of the year. He loved treasure hunting and was often on the antique hunt by 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

He was proud of his roots and the family history that spanned decades. As the son of a WWII Colonel, he traveled lots of miles and created many memorable experiences. He loved spending time with Grandma Jennie at his family’s Cofers Designs of Norfolk. Those whose lives he touched are better for simply having known him, and will take his memories with them.

He was the current owner of Brown’s Metal Buyers and partner of Hurbrows Auction; as well as owner of various antique stores in Gloucester, Virginia.

His friends cherished the times that they spent with him and lingered to hear one more “Alan story.” He could tell you about being an arm-wrestling champion, his youth in Kennebunkport, Maine, his law enforcement career, his TV debut on 60 Minutes, his adventures as Captain on the “Donna L,” his escapades as a Miami club owner, his auctioneer stories, his art apprenticeship under Barclay Sheaks, his collection of exotic cars, his career as a Norfolk restaurant owner and chef, his parade of pets. And he always gave quality time and recognition to the people who were nearest and dearest to his heart.

You never had to wonder where Alan stood on an issue or what his opinion might be because he was more than willing to tell it straight without sugar coating. He was well respected for his knowledge of a variety of subjects ranging from vintage cars to jewelry design. If you were looking for the unique and hard-to-find item, call Alan.

He lived life to the fullest with the only regret of leaving behind his life partner of 32 years, Donna, and their family of pets. His memory will be kept alive with stories, laughter, tears and those precious times spent with him. A date for a memorial service is pending.
