Aberdeen pier restoration completed

The long-awaited project to restore the Aberdeen Creek Wharf pier was completed on Dec. 29 and the pier is now open for public use.
Construction for the project began in August. This was the third time that this pier has been rebuilt, according to county engineer Kim Beatley. The pier was first constructed about 50 years ago and the last time it was rebuilt was about 25 years ago.
“I am glad it’s done,” said Beatley. “Those guys (the watermen) needed a safe place to work.”
This was a joint project with Gloucester County and the Virginia Port Authority, with Docks of the Bay serving as contractor. The project was funded 25 percent by the county and 75 percent by a grant from the port authority.
“I want to thank the Virginia Port Authority for the grant, The [Docks of the] Bay and their subcontractors for their work, and Aberdeen Aquatics for allowing the use of their waterfront and their property temporarily while the pier was being reconstructed,” Beatley said.
