As the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team kicks off the 2022-2023 season, the squad is introducing two new assistant coaches.
Coach Rob Marrero is from Gloucester, where he assisted the Lady Dukes varsity basketball team, as well as various ages of recreational leagues of basketball, baseball and soccer. Marrero also started a youth program to introduce basketball to young ladies in Gloucester and surrounding counties called “The Workshop.”
Marrero has played basketball himself, competing at the AAU level up until the age of 16. “I chose Mathews because our family recently moved here and I was already familiar with most of the girls on the team,” he said. “I already knew how passionate they were about the game and how hard they all work. It was an easy decision.”
