Throughout the year, the Mathews High School wrestling team lost only one regular season match, falling to Franklin High School. After that loss, they made a comeback and won the rest of the regular season dual, tri, and quad matches.
On the tournament side, the team had a strong showing at each of their weekend tournaments. The Blue Devils pulled out back-to-back wins at last month’s District and Super Regional tournaments. A long season of growing their relatively new team, MHS traveled to Bristol to compete in the 1A State Championship on Saturday.
The state tournament was a one-day event, held at Virginia High School. The wrestlers who competed in the tournament were Vanessa Boyd (106), Zac Salvadori (120), Franklin Cardenas (126), Sal Cardenas (132), Jayden Boyd (138), Roane Gray (144), Jesse Monastyrly (150), Ivan Schaible (157), Darin Echeverria (165), and Richard Hahn (175).
