23 years later: Service remembers 9/11 tragedy

A 9/11 Remembrance and Patriotic Service held on Sunday at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church drew more than 120 people to remember the many lives lost and sacrifices made by first responders on Sept. 11, 2001.
On that day, hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people. The annual remembrance also honored the first responders of Mathews County.
“It was a beautiful day on the grounds of the Gwynn’s Island Civic League for the morning worship service,” said Pastor Ed Jordan of Gwynn’s Island Baptist in a press release. “All present honored and celebrated the ongoing dedication and service of our county’s first responders.”
The service included Hunter Owens singing the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, a crowd sing-along to patriotic songs, a song by Island Praise, the church’s praise band, and a special presentation of “I’m Proud to be an American” by Ada Barnes. Tyron...
