$20M available for preservation of historic landmarks in Virginia

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources has received $20 million from this year’s General Assembly to allocate for historic preservation of landmarks in Virginia. The aim is to boost preservation efforts in advance of the nation’s 250th anniversary, its semiquincentennial, in 2026.
A release from the office of Gov. Glenn Youngkin said the Virginia 250 Preservation Fund will be administered by DHR to support capital improvement projects at historic sites and museums “that anticipate a significant increase in visitation during the upcoming semiquincentennial.”DHR will use a two-step grant application process. Pre-applications are being accepted until Aug. 30. The projects that advance will have until Oct. 30 to submit a full application.
Eligible applicants, the release said, include nonprofit organizations that are registered as tax exempt; Virginia localities; and state- or federally-recognized Indian tribes in Virginia. All applicants must own the project property.
