The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team started its season off with a 4-2 victory over Western Branch, the sixth ranked school in Hampton Roads, at home on Tuesday. Head coach Joe Dougherty said the win is a great way to start the season as Gloucester entered the game as the 11th ranked team in the area.
Reese Miller led the team offensively with two goals and one assist. Kaylee Hall and Charlotte Houtz also scored during the game. Houtz, Mackenzie Reece and Kamryn McDonough each recorded two assists in the game. Addy Jeffrey recorded an assist as well. Avery Watkins, McKayla Clark and Abby Junker delivered outstanding defensive performances.
Dougherty said the Dukes outshot the Bruins, 34-3, and earned nine penalty corners versus the opponents’ one. The Dukes traveled to face Landstown High School Wednesday and play again tonight at Prince George High School.
