Services and other activities in area churches this week include the following:

ABUNDANT HARVEST WORSHIP CENTER

On Sunday, Pastors Wil Early and Gloria Savage-Early of Abundant Harvest Worship Center, will speak on the topic "A Mother’s Commitment in Troubled Times," at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Ware Academy, Gloucester.

 

BELLAMY UNITED METHODIST

Health and Welfare of Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will collect items for the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic. Kids with Purpose will accept donations on Sunday for its current project, Jarrett Frush, a 7-year-old with cerebral palsy.

It was also announced that the United Methodist Men will sponsor a yard sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 17 and that baskets were filled on Sunday for the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic by the Seekers Class in memory of Dick Baldwin and Elaine Bykonen.

 

BETHANY UNITED METHODIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. Steve Young, pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, for both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services will be "Upon Your Sons and Daughters."

 

BETHEL BAPTIST

The Rev. Michael Wayne Jackson, associate minister of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas, will preach at the 11 a.m. communion service Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester.  The Adult Choir will sing, directed by the Rev. Richard Jackson.

 

BETHEL UNITED METHODIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. Michael Sullivan, pastor of Bethel United Methodist Church, Onemo, at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday will be "Light ’em Up."

 

CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. Carl Ulrich, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday will be "Welcome the Spirit."

 

CHURCH OF ABRAHAM

The Rev. Janice M. Burse, associate minister of Church of Abraham, 17 Plaza Shopping Center, Ordinary, will preach at the 8 a.m. service Sunday. Saturday Bible Study will be held at 8 a.m.

 

CHURCH OF THE LIVING WORD

The sermon topic of Senior Pastor Gregory Woodard of Church of the Living Word, Hayes, at the 10 a.m. service Sunday will be "Kingdom Principles to Live By, Part 3."

 

EBENEZER BAPTIST

Pastor Richard Ford of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Gloucester, will preach at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. Mothers will be recognized and there will be a baby dedication service. Youth will leave following the service to attend a Christian concert at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg.

On Thursday, Majesty Christian Academy will have an open house from 6:30-8 p.m. On Wednesday, a dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m.

 

EMMAUS BAPTIST

Emmaus Baptist Church, North, will celebrate Women’s Day at 11 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Sheron Green of the Church of Abraham at Ordinary, will be the guest speaker. Music will be provided by the Emmaus Youth Choir, and the Seeds of Faith of the Church of Abraham.

 

FAITH BAPTIST

Faith Baptist Church, Bohannon, will honor mothers during the 10:45 a.m. service on Sunday. Scott and Angie Clawson along with Kathleen Baker will present special music. A new Bible study, "Down Pour," will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD

First Assembly of God, near Mattaponi, will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

 

FIRST BAPTIST, MATHEWS

The Kingdom Ministries International of First Baptist Church, Mathews, will hold a bake sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Best Value store in Mathews. Proceeds will go toward a mission trip to Africa.

 

FIRST BAPTIST, ORDINARY

The sermon topic of the Rev. Gary Hundley, pastor of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "Everyone, Remember the Lord." The Senior Choir will sing, and the Lord’s Supper will be observed.

The church will sponsor a trip to Lancaster, Pa., Saturday, June 28 through Sunday, June 29, 2008, to see the play, "In the Beginning." Cost will be $205 per person (double occupancy).  Contact Sharon Washington at 694-7362 to make reservations.

 

FIRST MORNING STAR BAPTIST

The Rev. Haywood Barnes Jr., pastor of First Morning Star Baptist Church, 8906 Guinea Road, Bena, will preach at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. The Men’s Choir will sing under the direction of the Rev. James L. Harris.

 

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN

The sermon topic at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday in First Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, "Only Nine O’clock in the Morning." It was also announced that there would be a reception of new members and the sacrament of baptism.

 

THE FIRST UNITED BAPTIST

Minister Rashinda Davis will speak at 11 a.m. Sunday in the First United Baptist Church, White Marsh. Her topic will be "Your Faith is Necessary."

The Combined Choir directed by C. E. Radford will sing.

 

GLOUCESTER POINT BAPTIST

The sermon topic of Pastor Bruce Warrington of Gloucester Point Baptist Church at the 11 a.m. communion service Sunday will be "Honor Your Mother." At 6:30 p.m., there will be dessert and the movie, "The Wager," starring Randy Travis.

 

GLOUCESTER UNION RELIEF OF MISSIONARY CHURCHES

The Gloucester Union Relief of Missionary Churches will sponsor a Bible Institute on Monday through Friday, May 16, at First Morning Star Baptist Church, 8906 Guinea Road, Bena. There will be two class sessions at 7:10 and 8:10 p.m., with dismissal at 9 o’clock. For additional information or to register, call Evelyn Wright at 642-5959.

 

  GWYNN’S ISLAND BAPTIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. David Patton, pastor of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "The Comfort of God." Special music will be provided by the church choir with Gib Pulley as soloist.

The mission emphasis for May will focus on ministries of the Mid-Tidewater Baptist Association.

 

LIGHTHOUSE WORSHIP CENTER

Mark Smith, a missionary to Mexico, will be the guest speaker at the 10 a.m. service Sunday in Lighthouse Worship Center, Ordinary. He leads construction teams to Mexico to build and plant churches. Mother’s Day will also be celebrated with music, games with prizes and a gift for every woman in attendance.

MACEDONIA BAPTIST

The Pastor Search Committee of Macedonia Baptist Church, Foster, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The second Sunday social will be held at 9:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall with Sunday school classes to follow. Dr. John Carpenter, former pastor of North Riverside Baptist Church, Newport News, will speak at the 11 a.m. service. Cindy Black will be guest soloist and the SonShine Club, along with their mothers, will sing.

 

MATHEWS BAPTIST

The sermon topic at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, will be "It’s Mother Love, Not Smother Love."

 

MATHEWS CHAPEL UNITED METHODIST

The sermon topic of Pastor Harry Loyd of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, at the 11 a.m. service Pentecost Sunday will be "Renewable Energy."

Luminaries for the Relay for Life celebration to be held Saturday, May 17, may be ordered from the Chapel Chargers.

Sunday school classes are preparing sewing kits, layette kits, health kits and school kits for the annual conference. Information on the mission kit contents is available at the church.

 

NEW BEGINNINGS OUTREACH CENTER

Pastor Barbara Gibbs of New Beginnings Outreach Center, Mobjack, will teach the 10 a.m. Sunday school on Sunday. Evangelist Carol Eades of Woodford, will preach at the 11 o’clock services. Mothers will be honored.

 

NEW CREATION MINISTRIES

New Creation Ministries, Cobbs Creek, will sponsor a one-day basketball tournament from 3-8 p.m. Saturday at Mathews High School. Registration will be $15 per person. Contact 854-6626 for more information.

 

NEW MT. ZION BAPTIST

The Deaconess Ministry of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 11127 Woods Cross Roads, Gloucester, will sponsor its annual Mother’s Day luncheon at noon Saturday. The Women of the Bible will be featured. There will be a donation of $10, a release noted.

 

NEWINGTON BAPTIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. Mike Gray, pastor of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, at the 10:15 a.m. service Sunday will be "A Mother’s Discipline." There will be a Mother’s Day celebration and child dedications during the service.

 

PETSWORTH BAPTIST

Dr. Richard Harrell will be the guest speaker at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services Sunday in Petsworth Baptist Church, Gloucester. Mothers will be honored at the services. Susan McGowan will have the special music and Kendall Worland will play an offertory instrumental.

Pastor Dennis Hollandsworth will lead the Adult Bible Study, "Facing the Giant of Fear," on Wednesday.

 

REEDSWOOD CHRISTIAN

Minister Dave Thornton of Reedswood Christian Church, Gloucester, will speak on "Mom—The VIP of My Life" at 11 a.m. Sunday. The new candidate for youth minister will be presented to the church by the elders after worship, with no youth group meeting on Sunday.

Other activities will include: Thursday, 10 a.m., Ladies Bible Study in Fellowship Hall; Friday, 5:30 p.m., youth art night; Saturday, 12 noon, ladies mother and daughter luncheon in Fellowship Hall; Wednesday, 7 p.m., Adult Bible Study, "Silencing the Christians, Part 2," and Youth Class meet will be presented Wednesday at 7 p.m.

 

SALEM UNITED METHODIST

The United Methodist Men of Salem United Methodist Church, 11408 Salem Church Road, Gloucester, will hold a Mother’s day breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Sunday.

Adult "Happy Hour" Bible Study will be held at 7 p.m. every Wednesday under the leadership of Homer and Carol Scott to study the book of John. Nursery will be provided.

 

SEVERN CHURCH

Mothers will be recognized at the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Severn Church, Naxera.

The Joyful Hands Women’s Circle will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church for Bible study and refreshments.

 

SHEPHERDSVILLE BAPTIST

The sermon topic of Senior Pastor Fred Carter of Shepherdsville Baptist Church, 8279 Fary’s Mill Road, Gloucester, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "Mothers Making Hard Decisions." Irving Driver will conduct the Senior Choir. The sermon topic of Pastor Kevin Thompson at the 8 a.m. service will be "Choices, Choices, Choices." Donald Driver will teach the 9 o’clock Sunday school.

"Kingdom Principles and Mothers" class will be held at 10 a.m. Friday.

 

SMITHFIELD BAPTIST

Smithfield Baptist Church, Gum Fork, will honor mothers at the 11 a.m. service Sunday. The sermon topic of Pastor-Elect Steven J. Daniels will be "For the Mother in You." The Combined Choir will sing under the direction of Thelma Pollard. Sunday school will convene at 9:30 with a study of Acts 1.

 

SPRING HILL BAPTIST

Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will conduct a Mother’s Day service at 11 a.m. Sunday, honoring mothers with flowers. The sermon topic of the Rev. Dr. Chuck McDaniel, pastor, will be "Hagar, A Mother’s Love."

 

ST. MATTHEW UNITED METHODIST

The sermon topic of Pastor Michael Sullivan of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Peary, at the 9:45 a.m. service Sunday will be "Light ’em Up!"

 

ST. PAUL BAPTIST

The sermon topic of the Rev. Bradley A. Holmes, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Gloucester, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "Mother’s Beatitudes."

 

UNION BAPTIST

The sermon topic of Pastor Pat Coffey of Union Baptist Church, Achilles, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "We Are Easter People, Part 5." There is no evening service. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Coffey will speak on "A New Creation."

 

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK

On Sunday, Shirley Kinney will introduce an annual flower communion at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock. Each congregant is asked to bring a plant to be included in the landscaping of the new "Home of Our Own" on James Wharf Road in White Stone, a release noted.

 

WAY TO ETERNAL LIFE

Way to Eternal Life Church, 2540 Hayes Road, will hold a Youth worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Leon Abbott, pastor, will preach. Youth worship leader will be Steven Sweten, and special music will be by Brittany Clayborne, and the Youth Choir.

 

WESTVILLE BAPTIST

Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, will be open from 9 a.m.-12 noon each Wednesday its food pantry. The puppet ministry training will also be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Friday.

 

WESTVILLE CHRISTIAN

The sermon topic of the Rev. Tim Dice, pastor of Westville Christian Church, Mathews, at the 11 a.m. service Sunday will be "Sources of Nurture."

 

WHITE MARSH BAPTIST

White Marsh Baptist Church will observe Mother’s Day during the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday. Mothers of the church will be recognized and there will be a baby dedication service. The sermon topic of the Rev. Scott Pond, pastor, will be "The Qualities of a Good Mother."

 

ZION POPLARS BAPTIST

Zion Poplars Baptist Church, 7000 T.C. Walker Road, Gloucester, will observe its worship service at 11:15 a.m. service Sunday. The Rev. Elton Pryor, pastor, will preach, and the Combined Choir will sing. Louis Brown will teach the Adult Class for May.

Prayer meeting and Bible study will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Vincent Haley will be the instructor.
