Not too many people have the opportunity to have a parent as a teacher, yet I had the rare experience of having both of my parents as teachers in high school. Now, while I often joked that, in a school of 350 students, my parents often knew what I was doing before I finished doing it; having the two of them as teachers taught and inspired me as no one else could have.

My dad, "Coach Griff," was my biology, chemistry, and local science teacher, and my softball coach. He was a tough taskmaster, as all of his football players and wrestlers can attest, but he was also straightforward with his students, which engendered an amazing amount of trust and respect. From him, I learned strength, honesty, a strong work ethic, and an unending list of scientific names. He also inspired a love of the science of life, which led to my choosing a career in pediatric occupational therapy, working with children with special needs to adapt to and overcome everyday challenges.

My mom, "Mrs. Griff," taught me French and I was her yearbook editor. She, too, served as a safe haven for her students who felt as if they could truly talk to her about their difficulties. Mrs. Griff was never too busy to talk to a student, even if that meant bringing hours of paperwork home. I learned quiet dignity and patience from her, and observing her commitment and care for every student continues to guide me in my interactions with my own children as well as the families and children with whom I work.

Now, as the Griffs count down the days to retirement on June 6, I can only hope that when I reach that stage of my life and career, I can look back as they can on the thousands of students whose lives they have touched, and know that everything was worth it.
