Gloucester varsity softball players had a win and a loss in action last week. The Dukes scored five runs in the top of the first inning Friday with Phoebus and never looked back.
Moore and Robb each had three hits and combined for three RBIs in the 11-0 win. Gloucester had four extra base hits highlighted by a long home run over the left centerfield fence by Lauren Kiser. Coates pitched a complete game, striking out 10 Phoebus batters.
Gloucester fell to the visiting Warwick Raiders, 5-4, on April 30. The Dukes took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third and fourth innings. Jenkins led off the third with a single and later scored on an infield error. Gloucester went on to load the bases with no outs but failed to score. In the fourth with one out, the Dukes loaded the bases on two errors and a bunt by Mara Firth before Stevens scored on an infield hit by Bressin for the 2-0 advantage.
Warwick battled back for four runs in the fifth inning. With two outs and none on, the Raiders put four runs on the board with only one hit in the inning. The Dukes tied the game in the sixth when Bressin tripled in Firth and went on to score on a single by Robb. Warwick then scored the winning run in the seventh.
