The Gloucester Dukes have won nine of their last 10 Peninsula District baseball match-ups for an 11-5 record and fourth place in district standings. Last week, they avenged three earlier season losses with wins over Warwick, Phoebus and Menchville before beating Denbigh, 12-2, in five innings Tuesday. Gloucester coach Derek Kibler said good pitching, solid defensive play and timely hitting have kept the Dukes on the winning side.
Gloucester won, 4-1, over visiting Warwick last Thursday with Aaron Bremar throwing a four-hitter and striking out seven. Drew Whitlow went two- for-three with two runs and an RBI and Joey Burney was two-for-three with a triple, a run and an RBI. Justin Belvin added a double with two RBIs.
The Dukes blanked host Phoebus, 10-0, in five innings on Friday. Belvin threw his second one-hitter of the season and went two for two with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Bremar and Burney each had doubles and back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth and Cameron Cecil had two hits.
Daniel Lutz had a seven hit, one walk performance on the mound in the 5-2 win over visiting Menchville Saturday. All five Gloucester runs came in the third inning, with Colby Wiggins leading off with a single up the middle. Trey Watford knocked him in with a double off the left field fence. Mitchell Delusa followed with an RBI single and Drew Whitlow then moved Delusa over with a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk of Burney, Bremar hit a single to score Deluse. Burney also scored on the play after the right fielder misplayed the ground ball. After a fielder’s choice by Belvin and an error on Lutz’s sharply hit ground ball, Cecil knocked in Belvin with a double. Belvin came in to close out the seventh and the Dukes got their first win over the Monarchs in at least five years.
Gloucester won, 12-2, after five innings with visiting Denbigh on Tuesday behind Bremar’s four-hitter. Belvin and Wiggins were three for three in the win, while Delusa, Whitlow and Bremar each added two hits.
