The Gloucester High School junior Dukes are 4-1-2 in Peninsula District soccer with two matches remaining. In recent action, the Gloucester jayvees had a narrow 2-1 loss to visiting Menchville on April 30 but rebounded for an exciting 1-0 home-standing win over Denbigh on Saturday.
The Dukes controlled the ball for most of the game with the Monarchs but were unable to capitalize on opportunities until the final minutes when Kyle Leonard hammered home a volley to avoid the shutout. Midfielders Hagen Witt, Cody Weaver and Jordan Clifford consistently played good balls up to the forwards in the loss.
The lone goal against the Patriots came in the first half off a free kick taken by Clifford at forward. Gloucester attempted many other shots but none found their marks. P.J. Abel had a strong game at keeper to get the shutout.
The Dukes were slated to travel to Woodside yesterday before closing the season at Heritage on Saturday.
