Andy Nagel of Gloucester, a member of the Roanoke College track team, recently set a new school record in the 400 meter hurdles. In a field of mostly Division I athletes, Nagel used patience and a furious kick in the final straightaway to place third in his heat of the 400 hurdles at the Liberty University Twilight Qualifier. Running under the lights, Nagel was in last place 150 meters into the race among seven athletes. In the last 100 meters, the sophomore kept his form and charged past four of the hurdlers to set a new school record of 54.46 seconds, according to Roanoke track coach Finn Pincus. Nagel’s time placed him on the national qualifying list, Pincus said, the first time for a Roanoke male hurdler in over 20 years.
