The Gloucester jayvee softball team continued its domination of the Peninsula District last week with wins over Warwick and Phoebus. The Lady Dukes faced a tenacious Warwick team on April 30 but prevailed, 8-3, in seven innings. Gloucester pitcher Taylor Distefano struck out 10 of 27 batters, allowing only two hits for three runs. The Dukes struggled offensively with only eight hits but pulled out eight runs. Hannah Joyce was 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles, a double and two runs and Jordan Killinger was strong, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Ashley Williams and Kasey VonEngel each contributed a RBI and the remaining run was scored on a stolen base. The Gloucester girls struck for 28 runs while allowing none against the Phantoms on Friday. The batting lineup performed better this time, led by Joyce going 5-for-5 with eight RBIs. Her hits included an inside home run and two doubles. Nicky Harvey was only 1-for-5 but accounted for four RBIs with a triple, two walks and one hit-by-pitch. VonEngel and Williams were each 2-for-5 with VonEngel cracking a well-placed triple and a single and Williams with one RBI. Distefano struck out 12 of 16 batters. The Lady Dukes’ last home game is Monday with Woodside.
