Gloucester High School rowers had two first-place finishes and several second-place showings in the Mathews High School Crew Regatta held Saturday at Williams Wharf. The men’s varsity four of coxswain Jackey Pusey and rowers Antony Markantonatos, Grayson Wilt, Brandon Hed- rick and Sam Kram took first place ahead of Great Bridge in 5:03.8. In the women’s novice four, coxswain Ducky Rondeau and rowers Morganne Roundy, Gabby Lauer, Stephanie Rivera and Elizabeth Keane won first place ahead of Forest Park with a time of 4:42.6. Second place finishes were accomplished by the following GHS crews: the men’s varsity double of seniors Will Bennett and Clay Greeley in 3:51.7; the men’s novice eight of cox Matt Hendrix, Ben Freudenberg, Chris Boehm, Joseph Howlett, Jordan Noe, Tyler Lothian, Zach Baranek, Zach Keener and Patrick Delacruz in 6:13.2; the women’s varsity four of cox Sarah Frye, Dana Meadows, Erika Baranek, Kristen Hickman and Molly Martin in 5:59.9. Also, the men’s varsity lightweight four of cox Kelsey Hazelwood, Joey Heimberger, Michael Heaney, Ben Kram and David Collins in 3:18.7. This crew was also second in the second varsity four; the mixed novice eight of cox Maureen Divelbiss, Kristen Hickman, Freudenberg, Boehm, Howlett, Noe, Kara Cuba, Rachel and Janice Birdsall in 4:13.4; and the men’s varsity eight of cox Pusey, Markantonatos, Wilt, Hedrick, S. Kram, Heimberger, Heaney, B. Kram and Collins. The following crews were third in their events: the women’s novice eight of Divelbiss, Megan Wallace, Megan Woodlief, Katie Bridges, Lauer, Keane, Elizabeth Revak, Rivera and Shawni Thomas in 4:20.3; the women’s second varsity four of Lilly Beattie, Danielle Krueger, Lyndsey Marshall, Jessica Birdsall and Adrianna Krueger in 4:40.4 and Hazelwood in the varsity single in 5:48.6. The GHS women’s varsity eight placed fifth as did the varsity double of Meadows and E. Baranek and Greeley in the varsity single. The novice mixed four and women’s varsity quad were sixth in their events. Additionally, Gloucester edged out Mathews in the coxswains’ race. Results from the men’s novice four and the men’s varsity quad were not available. At Occoquan on April 26, the GHS varsity women’s four of Meadows, Baranek, Martin and freshman Hickman was first in 5:24.8 and finished 14 seconds ahead of the competition. Also placing first were Greeley and Bennett in the varsity double in 5:32.2, the light weight four of Hazelwood, Heaney, Heimburger, B. Kram and Collins in 5:17.2 and the women’s novice four of Keane, Rivera, Lauer and Roundy in 6:38.8. The men’s varsity four and the women’s second four were third and the women’s novice eight was fourth. The Gloucester crew is headed to the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships on Saturday and select rowers will participate in the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia on May 16 and 17.
