HURRICANES: The Baystars FC U13 Hurricanes have started the spring season with two wins, a loss and a tie. The Hurricanes tied the U13 Yorktown Siege, 2-2, with guest player Kain O’Brien scoring both goals. The team then blanked Chesterfield United Classic Blue, 4-0, with goals by William Daugherty, Patrick Murphy, Kelsee Oliver and Dustin Tietjen and beat the VA Rush Penn Buccaneers, 3-0, with two goals from Carver Fisher and one from Leah Procopi. In the most recent match, the Hurricanes fell, 3-2, to the FASA Hotspurs with goals from Kevin Speray and Williams, with Williams assisted by Lowther. Keepers Lee Loudermilk and Jonathan Warrington have combined for 23 saves over the four outings. RAIDERS: The Baystars U14 Raiders were edged, 2-1, by the VA Rush Swoosh Sunday in Virginia Beach. Mary Williams scored the lone Raiders’ goal in the first half with an assist from Carrie Adams. Keeper Rebekah Hade had five saves in each half, but the Swoosh slipped two balls by her in the second. Cheyenne Hogge, Cierra Griffith and Alyziah Gregor had notable defensive performances for the Raiders. STORM: The Baystars Storm suffered their first loss of the season Sunday with a 7-3 bow to the Old Dominion SC Krew in the first game of a doubleheader. Chris Lee, Nick Yarkey and John Moore scored for the Storm with Yarkey and Moore also credited with assists. The Storm regrouped for game two and avenged the loss with a 3-2 win. The Storm came out strong and defender Phillip Condra made an amazing save to help keeper Trip Vaughan, who also had several saves in the narrow victory. After a scoreless first half, Condra brought the ball to midfield and passed to Yarkey for the score. The Krew responded with two goals but Yarkey scored again for the tie. Condra had another outstanding save to help Vaughan before Lee received a pass from Ryan Hansin and struck for the winning goal in closing minutes. BULLDOGS: The Baystars Bulldogs dropped both sides of a doubleheader with the VA Rush Peninsula last weekend, both by small margins. In the first game, Rush scored late in the second half to break a 3-3 tie. Ricky Rutter and Nate Brumm combined in the goal for the Bulldogs and had several saves to keep the game close. Andrew Mortensen, Travis Wagner and Nate Brumm each scored. Mortensen and Wagner scored again in the second game, which the Bulldogs lost, 5-2.
